Art-Reviews-1 – in Memory of heinz hugel

Heinz Hugel, (30. 05. 1936 – 10. 05. 2018): „The Locked Paradise“ (1994)

Created with Nokia Smart Cam

The Locked Paradise

When I had entered the workshop of heinz hugel (hh) on this day, I would have stumbled almost over numerous, in piles layered black plates! Behind this my husband had sat on a chair, holding one of these plates in his hand.…

He told me that he could collect these slate-plates just from the neighborhood. One had asked him whether he could begin something with this old house wall covering.…

He had immediately accepted!

While he had sat there so, deepened in thoughts, and, at the same time had let take effect on himself the surfaces of the plates, there it had happened:

Inwardly, he had been touched deeply of the child scribbles which are to be seen on the lower half of those slate-plates.

To this, one must know that the former house wall paneling had been fixed in that way that the slate-plates had overlapped themselves. The upper part of a plate had been covered by the plate being over it up to the half while the lower half of a slate-plate had been able to be seen – and so on. And therefore, child-scribbles are to be seen on the lower half of all slate-plates!

The spontaneity of the child-scribbling-traces had not let him off any more! And so he had raised it to the topic of his work with this new material.…

In this meaning numerous slate-panel-works had come into being in the course of the time. I have chosen an example at which the request of hh based on the booster detonation described above considerably comes to the expression:

“The Locked Paradise” is a work from the year 1994. The upper part of the slate-plate is bearer of a wood-plate-rest. On this, a find-piece is fixed with partial weathered red lacquered color. The slate-plates show all traces of the former use: Holes, how those of the fastening in the upper area on the right as also on the left, there is to be seen how in this example the nailing at the building had served. In principle, hh had left the lower area of a slate free so that the child scribbles take effect and they become part of the work of art.

He had used frequently to communicate with the child scribbles by having added “unreadable handwriting-fragments” himself. This had been his concern – opposite the observer – to look for the conversation, to come into exchange of ideas.

With that, he had raised the spontaneous gestures of the children to a work of art of same value.

On the slate-plate selected by me above there is no “unreadable handwriting-fragment” of hh, what is part of the statement of this work!

In the characteristic of himself, in his quite personal way hh had held the conversation at the “action level” and had set opposite to his acting spontaneity the spontaneity of the child scribbles. “Acting in such a way” causes an immediate relation to the material, to the matter and with the body energy of its own. The observer, if letting himself, herself in on the “radiation” of the collage, the wood element, then, this process can be felt clearly!

That wood element absolutely has a special radiation with flair of rotting, of being frayed as also being nailed! And then, there is this red resplendent color-object, stuck on the wood surface looking like a sign or like a message! This may consist in this that the association “bitten apple” imposes itself.…

The locked paradise has separated all of us from the condition of the liberal unconcerned behavior by having got a consciousness about our awareness.…

Announcement: Art-Reviews by Renate Hugel

I have added a new side which you find on right on HOME under “sides” in a topmost place – with the title “Art-Reviews – in Memory of heinz hugel”. Into this I declare my future work to this topic. The category to this with the title of the same name is in preparation and will be able to be above found on HOME.                                                                                                                       rh

Examples of his works of art: Update to heinz hugel

Remark for the titles of the works shown:

Already in the years of 1970, 1980, heinz hugel had himself decided for the use of small initial letters. Today, nobody else stumbles over it. The use of small initial letters had got socially acceptable by then. Thank the “digital world”! rh

“female torso”, ceramic, 1998

“lyric poetry on ceramic”, ceramic plate with applications, 2003 – Created with Nokia Smart Cam

“embrace”, ceramic; element from the installation “checkmated”, 1998

“globetrotters”, wood thick board, partly iron, steel base formed like a pyramid, 1999

Created with Nokia Smart Cam “bowl with sphere”, ceramic, raku-fire, 2005

“sheep”, ceramic (raku) on marble plate, from the series “flint”, 2006

“hartz IV”*, oil on canvas, 80 cm x 100 cm, 1985

* “HartzIV” is the expression for a kind of unemployment benefit and is intended for guaranteeing the so-called basic needs for life. (Quite roughly explained) rh

Remark: In 1985, hh had given the title “workshop” to this oil painting: At that time, young people had for the first time been courageously enough to risk an existence of their own and to rent      empty stores or halls. This one, which nowadays is not any more something special, had been new at that time! These young independent working people had an inspiring mind and the courage to venture something. This atmosphere, hh had brought to expression by the poetic coloration – next to the broken window panes –.  The fact that the whole had hidden in itself a certain risk, hh had pointed out with the indicated game of chess. In 2008, heinz hugel had had a great individual exhibition with the title „Arcades” in the service center “Wagenfeld”. At this occasion, he had got the idea to give the picture a new title, namely “hartz IV”, spontaneously!  I think that he had wanted    then to express how many of these people anyway had failed and could not manage to exist with their independent work; and meanwhile, this fact had led to a dependence of “hartz IV”.

“our world on cruches”, ceramic on wood plate, colored taken,
35x35x49 cm, approx. 1998

“female torso”, from the series “one form and its variation breadth”, ceramic, raku-fire, h = 27 cm, 1984

“portrait”, ceramic on drainage pipe, raku-fire, 2007; Remark: Originally hh had made the form for this face (2007) for the ceramic sculpture “tolerance”. Here: A game with the facial expression. Renate Hugel

“crane”, digital photo, 40×60 cm, 2007; Remark: This photo is based on an outline of a small format from earlier time(approx. 1980). rh

Here: Part from the installation; digital work of art

Remark-*: The German title contains a pun: “spie(l)gelungen“… Inserting the letter “l” in brackets, two versions can be read: “Reflections” and “game turned out well “. hh refers to the self-     conception of theater itself with that: The real concern of it is to reflect behaviors of people. If this has been reached, then the game is excellent… rh

Today, I Report back!

I have had planned an update for a long time.

Since I, besides the care for my husband, I only could spare very little time, I did not afterwards come with the update:

The state of health of my husband, Heinz Hugel, had always changed faster than I could write (in the brevity of the time)!

Therefore, what I wanted to write had always been overtaken of a new stage!

What shall I say?

Now, it does not go on any more…

Heinz Hugel has died on May 10th, 2018.

For the death of my husband:

On the checking the files.…

While checking the files of my husband (hh), I have recently found two photos which I still would like to show here:

The first photo shows a sculpture, which must have arisen approximately at the time from 1985 to 1990. hh called it “the female dancer”.

(At that time – approximately since 1985 -, hh had started with working unite prototypes in clay and then, making of each of this a negative – form from plaster. Of each new sculpture, he did make such a form of plaster and from this three copies, varying in the surface design and, or in the choice of the clay.)

Though, the photo here does not have the function to present this sculpture. hh, rather had arranged this ambiance in which the “female dancer” is playing the leading role. This must approximately have been in the year 1998.  rh

Heinz Hugel: “female dancer”
Ceramic (approx. arisen from 1985 to1990)
 “female dancer with skull”
Arrangement + Photo: Heinz Hugel, approx. 1998

The figure radiates energy and drive, in the midst of a scene consisting of various things which had used to inspire heinz hugel as an artist.

The full to bursting life would like to get realized despite many adversities: The dancer is stuck and does not get on!

Besides this hindering, the two skulls are standing out, which hh had put to feet of the “female dancer”, apparently unable to move.

Therefore, to associate the factor “transitoriness and confrontation with the death” is intention!

This is one of the statements of this photo-arrangement!   rh

On the two next photos, the sculpture “metamorphosis” is to be seen.

heinz hugel: „metamorphosis“
Sculpture of wood, ceramic, metal pillars and metal base
h = 140 cm, 2003

The sculpture consists in the lower part of the torso of a tree-trunk. This one had been remained merely half, had got hollowed out, adapted to the outer curve of the wood and colored by hh. Above, the upper part of the body, with indicated head, seems to be floating (held however, with two metal pillars).

An ease therefore contrasts with the heaviness of the torso.

The torso pausing in the heaviness has something defining in its dimension.

But the consciousness would like to shell out the sensitive, soft core!

hh had worked the bust of white clay, mainly smoothed, however letting partial roughly.

He is showing here therefore a transition process, just a metamorphosis!

The represented person is headed by the consciousness.

The attention is devoted to the higher spheres! And, the bowl which stands for “head” somehow reminds of a satellite – bowl!

The person is adapted for “reception”! …

The first photo, heinz hugel has taken in the gallery “Haus am Wasser” (house at the water) in Bremen during an exhibition of works of hh in 2004.

The second one is another version of the photo hh had processed later.

The subject “metamorphosis”,hh had extracted there and processed in this manner that the corporeal of the bust in the upper part of the sculpture does not take effect any more.

The provider of the consciousness (in the upper part) seems to have overcome the corporeality – while “the heaviness” seems to be left to the earth! …

Meantime, on an old exhibition-work-list written by hh, I have found details for this sculpture. I could take from it that the wood-torso is out of poplar wood.

Particularly interesting I think that hh had offered a second title-version:

“metamorphosis …meta-amorphous…pose”

heinz hugel loved the pun and the game with several meaning-levels!

This comes excellently to the expression in this title-variant:

The second photo-version (revised) could be fit for this title.

hh provides a reference to the, to itself, formless (amorphous) of the represented abdomen (of the hip downward). Tree-torso, how also legs and male genitals, can be associated. The upper part of the body, worked out in detail and seeming to float (on the second photo), can merely be suspected by the contours and looks like rising to an suspected meta-level!     rh

These are a couple of aphorisms of me for the sculpture “metamorphosis” and for the photo-arrangement of heinz hugel!

To both, I could write my long interpretations!

For this cause I prefer to leave it at my short explanations today.   rh

So it will go on in the near future

So it will go on – in slow speed – in the near future:

To the memory of Heinz Hugel, I will present a composition of some of his works of art. It will be a crosscut therefore around examples of his starting time as an artist up to examples of his last work (before a partial dementia illness had happened).

After having done this presentation I would like to start with a new category:

I will respectively sporadically introduce a work of art of Heinz Hugel and write an interpretation to this.

Having started with this, I plan, in parallel, to continue writing on my blog under „Art Touches Art“– like already before –  to the art of American Natives  (in connection with our project “Art Touches Art” of  2000 and 2001)

Why had been there no more new articles for a long time?

“Renate Hugel-Selfy”, 2017

Our life has fundamentally changed!

Heinz (Hugel) had had a heavy fall at home, with the result: Thigh-neck-fracture!

Due to his 81 years, it had been a risk operation which had become necessary. It is really astonishing how fast the movement ability fails and has, in the consequence, a long way ahead in order to be able to leave the wheelchair again.…

I would like to apologize that I have not called so long. Today, I have been able to collect my thoughts for the first time at leisure again.

Heinz’s condition lets suggest a laborious way still. Therefore, I cannot name a firm appointment when I will be able to continue writing.

But, I will continue writing – although possibly very, very slowly.…

In this contribution I introduce some examples of the photo work of Lamontt Bear. These are testifying a life having been stamped by the ancestors, by the nature, by traditions like also by technology, and by men…

With the photography LB has discovered the medium for himself, which can transport to the outside his look at the world grown in a special way… In addition I have enclosed by quotations of Lamontt Bear as also of Carol Whitney:

Lamontt Bear – Part I

Lamontt Bear:  “Sunset Mount Scott, Oklahoma”,  Oklahoma (USA), 2011

Lamontt Bear: (American Native of the Kiowa)

Impressions from Oklahoma – On a Journey back to the “Internalized Places”

In this current contribution I introduce photos of Lamontt Bear (LB) (Kiowa native of America). His photos touch by their strength and intensity: He awards an increase to the natural spectacle offering him to the absolute beauty of itself by putting his chosen subject so into scene that it does not only reflect the intensity of the colors but also banks them up to celestial beauty…

Looking at the shown photo series as a whole (see below this text), I get the impression as if a certain philosophy is inherent in the individual picture topics of LB.…

To recognize this, at first I deal with the personal background of LB:

Of course I would first of all like to let LB personally come to word: “I am sending these pictures of the places, I find solitude…Wichita mountains wildlife refuge – Ft. Cobb Lake. As a child and now an adult, spent a lot of days in these places with my grandfather whom taught the closeness to our native heritage.”… (Quotation of Lamontt Bear)

To him, the Kiowa grandfather, it had been existentially important to pass on the inheritance of his own ancestors to his children and grandchildren! When Lamontt Bear had grown up to a young man, then, for his grandfather had come the time to instruct his grandson now into – what according to custom of the ancestors – a Kiowa has to learn:

He should receive the education which was provided for a young man in the past as the right education!

The Kiowa grandfather went therefore with his grandson Lamontt Bear to the Wichita Mountains, climbed the Mt. Scott together with him or they went for fishing to the Ft. Cobb Lake.

After the phase of the introduction time had been ended, the grandfather went back and left the Wichita Mountains. Lamontt Bear was left to himself in this total emptiness of the mountains now.

Because, to be able bearing solitude, this it is, what has to be learned – with that this is the great worthwhile aim of his Kiowa ancestors. They knew that this experience lets the young person mature and leads to inner strength by having a good look at oneself. This indicates to find one’s peace at long last, too.

Learning how to survive, as also to communicate with nature, these are further learning goals having been extremely important to his Kiowa ancestors.

In the course of the years, furthermore LB had attained an inner familiarity to nature and for her rhythmical changes within a day, month or within a year.

So he himself almost had become part of this nature surrounding him because he reacted to everything unexpected intuitively meanwhile! And his nature had got strengthened, quiet and patient because he had coordinated humanly wanting such, to be mutually agreed with the nature!

He could nevertheless be energetic and think purposefully. Because his action framework corresponded just as intuitively to his inner attachment to nature!

The descendant of the famous White Bear* had become a recognized member of his family, like also of his complete social environment now!

(* White Bear, the famous warrior from the 1800s years)

Included, there were his Kiowa relatives and others Kiowa families, well-known to him and there were Cheyenne relatives and others Cheyenne families well-known to him at the same time, too. Because: Lamontt Bear has a Kiowa father and a Cheyenne mother. They had remarked very well that something special had become from LB:

“One of his Cheyenne uncles said he is like the special warriors who were known as the bravest protectors in the old days.  Lamontt Bear is a mix of the old and current ways.”  (Quotation of Carol Whitney)

The recognition, which the young Lamontt Bear had got within the family and of friends, this had been good for Lamontt Bear! And he embodied as well all pride and courage now, like his people did it!

He was therefore integrated and identified himself with his people, the natives in the southwest of Oklahoma!

Of course the world around him worked quite differently!

He could and did not want to negate this!

LB had decided therefore to get involved in this world, as well!

LB learned a profession. It also had drawn him to the distance, to people elsewhere in the world. He likes to look back at it, that he has worked in many countries among others also in Germany…

From the experience of solitude it had drawn him to the people and had become cosmopolitan…

He says of himself today that he has lived really many lives!

Meanwhile, he likes to go to the places of his youth again. The feeling of once had changed – also the position! This insight had got him to this, to integrate a new element into his life: the camera!

With his “special accumulated experience” Lamontt Bear has a considerable “capital” which demands him at the same time to express this with his photos such, so that something of his experience is transported to the observer!

There are the photos on which LB lets the celestial beauty of the nature play the leading role by having put them into scene perfectly.

Other subjects show further places which had been familiar to LB – on the Mt. Scott, in the Wichita Mountains, at the Ft. Cobb Lake or in the Wichita Mountain Refuge

With his photos, LB does not only integrate the time with his grandfather and the solitude. He also devotes himself to the technology topic which had accompanied him during his work and had determined his thinking in this period. I think for example of the photo “Wind Turbine in the Fog”. I find fascinating, at this photo how the original technical subject can be recognized merely as a “quotation (on the left photo page, one wing of the wind turbine is running beveled over the picture). This one is shining in the orange color of the light surrounding him. Such, the photo is determined by the gleam of light in the diffuse environment, the fog. Technology is stepping down in face of the nature event…

Lamontt Bear: “Wind Turbine in the Fog”

On another photo, LB has picked out wind turbines as a central theme. Also here, nature determines the event. A dramatic sky dominates the scene and the complete picture-room. With the chosen perspective LB makes clearly visible how small man is basically – in the face of nature. For this, he has gone (with his camera) onto the level of the brushwood which can be seen in the foreground of the narrow country stripe. Out of this viewpoint, some of the clouds seeming dangerous touch almost the earth. The above, is dived in black, like also a part of the country stripe, while the between lets suspect the extension of the sky-room! Those immense extents of the sky and event qualify the size and stability of the wind turbines – and their braces of steal are playing (in the perception of the observer) with the thin branches of the brushwood in the foreground…

Lamontt Bear: “Wind Turbines”

The photos on which LB banks the beauty of nature also have drama. Nature follows the changes of the proportions of the powers and their dynamics is neutral, does not refer to the welfare or drift of man…

This is surely a message which transmits us, as observer, Lamontt Bear with his photos.

And this message shows his young years in which he “has breathed with nature”…

Renate Hugel

For the end I would like to quote Carol Whitney, who accompanies LB since some years on his ways, back to the places of his childhood:

“Lamontt-Bear’s vision sees beyond the mechanical recording of nature.  He captures the magic of light, mass and structure.  He perceives beauty beyond words… through his mind and experience of nature.

His camera is the tool with which he shares his vision.

His Native American roots provide the crystal lens conveying what he sees.”… (Carol Whitney)

Here, Lamontt Bear personally introduces himself:

 Lamontt Bear in the Portrait

It had been my concern to receive a portrait photo. What I have got, this were three photos.

According to my understanding Lamontt Bear had not been content with a representation of his outward appearance. It rather is for him about what his personality arranges:

The solitude in the mountains had become a part of his person and had stamped his personality with that. What the photo in the middle shows symbolically.

Furthermore, the photo below shows a situation in which Lamontt Bear is in a meditative condition. The lights-situation of the photo lets merge LB with the landscape in the Wichita Mountains.

The photo shows for me that LB had acquired the ability to let himself in on the quite being of the nature.

His former deep experience of solitude had stamped his person of this manner that he could open himself to the world later! – Like the portrait-photo above points.

With other words: Lamontt Bear has summarized his life which has stamped the growth of his personality with these three photos to his person!
